چکیده

Ten insecticide formulations. including five ear tags containing pyrethroids, were tested against field populations of Tabanus abactor Philip. The most effective insecticide was the 1.0% pcrmethrin pour-on which caused greater than 55% mortality of exposed specimens through 2 weeks. The 10% permcthrin ear tag produced 79 and 55% mortality of T. abaclor 2 and 3 weeks after application, respectively. No other insecticide, including ear tags conLnining fenvalerate, nucythrinate or cypcrmethrin caused grcaler than 36% mOfllllity during any treatment period. None of the insecticides prevented this species from biting and taking a blood meal.

Use of the polymerase chain reaction to investigate the dynamics of pyrethroid resistance in Haematobia irritans irritans (Diptera: Muscidae).

A field study was conducted from 1991 through 1997 to evaluate the use of pyrethroid and organophosphate (OP) ear tags, alternated yearly, for the control of a pyrethroid resistant horn fly, Haematobia irritans (L.), population in Louisiana. Fly resistance was monitored by weekly fly counts, filter paper bioassays and diagnostic polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays for the presence of pyrethr...

1. Permethrin is a type I synthetic pyrethroid. It is an ester of the dichloro-analogue of chrysanthemic acid, and 3-phenoxybenzyl alcohol. Permethrin used in veterinary medicines is a mixture of four stereoisomers of the configuration ( [1R,trans], [1R,cis], [1S,trans] and [1S,cis]. The optical ratio of 1R:1S is 1:1 (racemic). Permethrin used in veterinary medicinal products is in the form of ...

and Implications To eliminate the potential for insect borne diseases and improve productivity in cow-calf operations, many producers use pour-on pyrethroids. However, popular press literature has identified potential links between use of pyrethroids and reproductive function failures in bulls. While literature in mice and rats have reported potential endocrine disruption of sex steroids result...

Evaluation of the VetCap® Treatment Method for Horn Fly Control on Cattle*

A field study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of the VetCap® treatment method for the control of horn flies on cattle. The VetCap® delivery system consists of a pressure (liquid CO2) driven launcher, and an encapsulated insecticide (CyLence®) formulation (10 ml CyLence® gel capsules). Three groups of cattle on three adjacent pastures were used, including: 1. Animals treated with 10 ml Cy...

Use of insecticide-impregnated ear tags for the control of face flies and horn-flies on pastured cattle.

Three studies were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of insecticide-impregnated ear tags in controlling face flies, Musca autumnalis DeGeer, and horn flies, Haematobia irritans (Linn.), on pastured beef cattle. In one 16-week trial, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) ear tags treated with stirofos (Rabon) insecticide reduced horn fly numbers by 79% (P less than .05) and face fly numbers by 30% (P l...
